A guide to replacing leather earpads on Sony headphones.
Are earpads replaceable?
I’ve been using my Sony WH-1000XM3 for more than 2 years. I like the way the headphones sound. 30 hours playing via Bluetooth on their battery. Fully charged in 2 hours via USB-C. Noise cancellation. Possible to listen over the wire. The headphones have their pros & cons.
However the earpads began being worn out after a year of use. And it became uncomfortable to use them.
Sony offer a one-year limited warranty. And in reality it can be already expired by the moment. Also if you travel or live abroad it might not work as it’s limited to specific countries, depending on where headphones were bought. This can be the case with any product.
Meanwhile they still work & sound good. But I don’t want to buy new ones just because of the worn out earpads.
Obviously, the earpads are consumables & must be replaceable.
How to replace earpads?
First of all, the headphones must be turned off & disconnected from charging.
Prepare the following items:
- A slotted screwdriver, scissors or something similar
- Cotton discs, cotton buds or a tissue paper
- Alcohol (after years of use there can be collected liquids inside headphones)
- New earpads & foam inserts
Inside the earpad you can feel 6 tabs on which it’s attached:
- Insert your slotted screwdriver into at least 2 of them under the earpad from the outside
- Pull the earpad to the side of that 2 opened tabs
- Take the foam inserts & a duct tape out (it can be displaced from the contacts with the wires)
- Wipe all internals with cotton discs with alcohol or cotton buds, and let it dry
After all, the opened headphones should look like this.
Setting new earpads
Place your new foam inserts on the left & right headphones.
Then insert the earpads themselves. Depending on the side, the top & bottom tabs must match. Press down on the earpads until all 6 tabs click into place.
And now the headphones look like new.
Where to get new earpads?
I found replaceable earpads for Sony WH-1000XM3 on Lazada. I use the Lazada shop as currently I live in Thailand. And Lazada has fast delivery from China. And the earpads are cheaper there.
Also Sony officially sell spare & replaceable headphone parts. They can be sold separately & their prices are higher.
I’ve collected links to some of the stores where you can find the earpads with minimal prices.
Whenever earpads have worn out it’s time to replace them. Don’t need to buy new headphones. Cheap replaceable earpads aren’t inferior in quality to the official expensive ones. And it’s not difficult to repalce them by yourself.
I’ve been using new earpads on my Sony WH-1000XM3 for already a month. And I can say I feel better in them than the previous ones. And they haven’t yet fallen apart, ha-ha.
